Understanding Full Grain Leather

What is full grain leather?

Full grain leather is one of the highest quality leathers available, prized for its strength, durability and natural character. It is a premium material, chosen for fine leather goods where the quality needs to extend beyond appearance.

It comes from the outer part of the hide, retaining its original surface without corrective sanding or buffing. The tightly packed fibres near this surface contribute to the leather’s resilience, making carefully selected full grain leather an excellent choice for pieces that are carried, folded and handled every day.

Natural lines, fine pores and subtle markings remain part of the material. These details give each hide its own character rather than the completely uniform appearance of a manufactured surface.

Full grain leather can still be dyed and finished. What defines it is that the hide’s original outer surface has been retained.

Full grain and top grain leather

These terms are often used confusingly. Top grain describes leather taken from the outer part of the hide, and full grain is its uncorrected form. When that surface is sanded or buffed to reduce markings, it is known as corrected grain leather.

The distinction matters because a uniform finish does not necessarily mean a better material. Full grain leather preserves the natural surface that makes a carefully selected hide so valuable.

Lower split layers have a looser arrangement of fibres and lack that original outer surface. They may be coated or embossed to resemble more expensive leather, but appearance alone cannot reproduce the qualities of carefully selected full grain.

Is full grain leather genuine leather?

Yes, but “genuine leather” is a much broader description. It means that a material is real leather, without telling you enough about its quality, which part of the hide was used or how it was treated.

Full grain gives you a more specific description. It identifies leather with its natural outer surface retained, an important quality in a material selected for lasting use.

Respected tanneries and responsible sourcing

We source our Italian leathers from respected tanneries including Conceria Walpier and Badalassi Carlo. Both are members of the Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium, which sets production requirements and subjects member tanneries to independent compliance checks.

Its commitments include environmental responsibility, controlled treatment of tanning wastewater and the recovery of processing waste for other uses.

The consortium states that all hides used by its member tanneries are by-products of the food industry, from cattle originally destined for food production. No animal is killed solely for its hide. These tanneries turn an existing by-product into a valuable, lasting material.

Why we choose it at Explorer Leather

The quality of the leather is fundamental to every piece we make. We choose premium full grain, vegetable tanned leathers because their strength, feel and character deserve the time invested in careful hand construction.

These are exceptional materials, selected to stand up to everyday use and develop a rich patina over time. Their colour, texture and sheen evolve, adding individuality to a piece made to be enjoyed for years.

For us, fine craftsmanship begins with fine leather. Both matter to the quality of the finished piece.
