Leather Patina: What to Expect
Patina is the gradual change in a leather's appearance and feel through use. It is one of the things I value about vegetable tanned leather: the piece continues to develop after it leaves the workshop.
How will my leather change?
You may notice a deeper colour, a gentle sheen or a smoother feel where the leather is handled most. Small surface marks can become part of its overall appearance. The changes will not necessarily be even across the whole piece.
There is no fixed timescale. The particular leather, its colour, exposure to light and the way you carry it all affect the result. Product photographs show the piece at the time it was photographed, rather than a promise that its colour will stay the same.
Pueblo changes noticeably
Badalassi Carlo Pueblo begins with a distinctive textured, matte surface. Through use, it becomes darker and smoother and develops a sheen. Its original colour and texture can change considerably. If you enjoy watching a material develop, this can be a rewarding part of owning it.
Patina and damage
A changing shade or smoother surface can be normal patina. A torn seam, deep cut, water stain or damage caused by prolonged moisture needs different consideration. Patina does not make leather immune to damage.
If you are unsure about a change in your piece, contact us with photographs and a description of what has happened. We can help you understand it.
Choosing with confidence
These leathers suit people who enjoy natural materials that evolve. If preserving the original shade is your priority, speak to us before buying so we can explain the behaviour of the leather you are considering.
