The Leather We Choose
The leather is a large part of what makes an Explorer Leather piece feel the way it does. I choose it for its character, how it works with a design and how it responds to everyday use.
We work with full grain, vegetable tanned leathers for our wallets, card holders, bags and accessories. Some are smooth and firm; others have a softer feel or a distinctive texture. The leather named in each product listing helps you understand what to expect.

Two terms, two different things
Full grain describes the retained grain surface of the hide. Vegetable tanned describes the tanning process. A leather can be both, but the terms are not interchangeable.
Made to develop character
As you use your piece, its colour and feel can change. This is called patina. It may appear as a deeper shade, a gentle sheen or a smoother surface in the places you touch most. The pace and extent of change depend on the leather, colour and how you use it.
That evolving appearance is one of the reasons I enjoy these leathers. A new piece and a well-used one can look quite different, and we want you to understand that before choosing.
The leathers in our workshop
Conceria Walpier Buttero has a smooth surface and a firm yet supple feel. Buttero Hatch adds an embossed crosshatch texture.
Badalassi Carlo Pueblo begins with a textured, matte surface that darkens and becomes smoother through use. Badalassi Carlo Wax has a waxy character, with shifts in shade as the leather bends.
We also use leathers supplied by Metropolitan Leather in England, including softer and firmer options suited to different designs. Check the individual listing for the leather used in your piece.
Find the right leather for you
If you enjoy materials that gain character through use, these leathers have much to offer. If keeping the original colour and texture is particularly important to you, read our patina guide or contact us before ordering. We are happy to help you choose.
